If you’ve been following Mountain Indivisible, you read about the incident that happened at our June 14th protest in Burnsville in our last post (click here to read that post<\/a>) We know that the protestor who was injured has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. A sincere thank you to the civilian first responder who came to assist while waiting for EMS to arrive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Safety is important to Mountain Indivisible. Prior to the protest, Mountain Indivisible leaders worked with Burnsville Police Department as well as Yancey County Sheriff’s Office to ensure they were aware of the protest and expected crowd size. Police were present from a distance and monitoring throughout the afternoon. In addition, as participants gathered prior to the start, leaders gave instructions for safety. Mountain Indivisible will continue to review safety precautions with participants at all events, provide training, and adapt as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 16, 2025, 4:13pm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Burnsville Police Department is currently investigating an incident that occurred Saturday on the Town Square. The incident was an altercation between Norman Rabek, 73, of Burnsville and Randy Horton Jr., 53, of Spruce Pine. Officers have collected numerous eyewitness statements and other relevant evidence including available video footage of the incident. Our office will be conferring with the District Attorney\u2019s Office to determine the appropriate charges to be filed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After conferring with the Yancey County District Attorney\u2019s Office, Randy Horton Jr. 53, of Spruce Pine was charged with Assault Inflicting Serious Injury, taken before the Magistrate\u2019s and placed under a $5000 secured bond. No further details will be released at this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
